We Tried 5 Carry-On Bags for Women: The $109 One Beat the $275 Suitcase
Checked-bag fees, creased outfits and heavy suitcases at the airport. We took five carry-on bags on real trips to find the one we'd hand to our own mothers before a flight.
By Melissa J. · Updated Nov 2026 · 6 min read
Through the airport, into the overhead bin, onto the hotel bed: every bag went on real trips, not just a shelf test. [CONFIRM: which trips + how long]
You know the routine. You pack the night before, sit on the suitcase to close it, pay $35 or more just to check it in, wait at the carousel when you land, and then open it to find your nicest dress creased like it spent the flight in a fist.
Same dress, same trip. Left: folded into a suitcase. Right: laid flat in a bag that opens like a garment bag.
Carry-on bags promise the opposite: no bag fees, no waiting at the carousel, and everything you need right next to you. But "carry-on" is printed on almost every bag these days, and they are very different once you actually travel with them.
So we tried five carry-on bags sold in the U.S., from a famous $275 hard-shell suitcase to stylish weekender bags around $100, and judged them on what matters on a real trip: whether your clothes arrive neat, whether it fits as a carry-on, how easy it is at the airport, how well made it feels, and value.
The most surprising part: the most expensive bag didn't win. You'll find the results further down.
Most big U.S. airlines now charge about $35–40 for your first checked bag, each way. That's around $70 or more for every round trip, before any second bag or overweight fee. Over a few years of family visits, weddings and weekend trips, it adds up quickly:
Based on typical first-checked-bag fees at large U.S. airlines in 2026 (about $35–40 each way). Fees vary by airline, route and ticket type. [CONFIRM: re-check fees before ads]
Why do suitcases crease your clothes?
A normal suitcase or duffel makes you fold. Dresses get folded in half, blazers get folded in thirds, and then everything is pressed together for hours. Rolling helps a little with T-shirts, but a dress or a blazer never comes out looking like it went in.
A garment bag solves that: your clothes travel flat, on a hanger. The problem is that most garment bags are long, floppy and awkward, and they don't count as your carry-on. The bag that won our test does both: it opens flat like a garment bag, then zips up into a carry-on.
What to look for in a carry-on bag
After several trips with five bags, these are the five things that made the difference:
Clothes that arrive neat. Can you lay a dress or blazer flat, or does everything get folded?
Carry-on size. It should fit the overhead bin and your airline's size rules, so you never pay to check it.
Easy at the airport. Comfortable handles, a shoulder strap, and ideally wheels for long walks to the gate.
Light and well made. Smooth zips, solid stitching, and a bag that isn't heavy before you've packed anything.
Fair price, no risk. A good bag shouldn't cost as much as the flight, and you should be able to return it.
The real test: does it go up into the overhead bin without a fight?
Always check your airline's size rules
Carry-on limits differ between airlines, and budget airlines are often stricter. Look up your airline's carry-on size before you fly, especially on smaller planes and international routes.
How we tested.

Winsome Voyagers™ Classic
SCORE9.4
Of everything we tried, this was the bag we wanted to take on every trip. Unzip it and it opens flat to about 37 in (94 cm), like a garment bag: your dress or blazer goes in on its hanger and lies flat, shoes go in the side. Zip it up and it becomes a structured carry-on, about 20.5 × 9.8 × 12.6 in (52 × 25 × 32 cm).
The real test was a wedding weekend: one dress, one blazer, two pairs of shoes and everything else for three days. The dress came out ready to wear, without hunting for an iron. [CONFIRM: real team experience]
At the airport it's easy to live with: two top handles, a detachable shoulder strap, and water-resistant faux leather in pink, beige or black that looks smart, not sporty. And at $109 (list price $140), it costs less than half of the $275 suitcase in our test.

In short
After several trips with five bags, the picture is clear: most carry-on bags make you choose. The suitcase rolls beautifully but creases your clothes and costs $275. The pretty duffels are roomy, but a dress still gets folded in half. Only one bag gave us a garment bag and a carry-on in one, at a fair price.
Paying to check a bag and ironing in the hotel aren't "just part of traveling". Often the problem isn't how you pack. It's what you pack in.
Voyagers™ Classic comes in three colors: pink, beige, and black.
Clothes arrive neat. It opens flat like a garment bag, so a dress or blazer travels on its hanger.
Carry-on, no bag fees. It zips into a structured carry-on that went into the overhead bin on every flight.
Easy at the airport. Top handles, a shoulder strap, and a Roller edition with wheels if you want it.
Fair price, no risk. $109 with free shipping and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
The gate check: Voyagers slid into the carry-on size checker with room to spare. Always check your own airline’s size rules.
Away is a great suitcase but creases your clothes and costs more than twice as much. Calpak and Béis are pretty, but have no garment section. Halfday has the right idea but a sporty look. Voyagers ticks every box.
How to pack a week in one carry-on
Hang the outfits that matter. Your dress, blazer or suit goes on the hanger in the garment section. Everything else goes around it.
Pick one color palette. Three tops and two bottoms that all match give you a week of outfits.
Shoes in the side, liquids on top. Keep your toiletry bag where you can lift it out at security.
Check your airline's size rules before every flight, especially on budget airlines and small planes.

Went to Italy for a wedding. It fit both my dress and my partners suit in the garment portion and was easy to zip into the bag for my extra clothes.

★★★★★My dress arrived wrinkle-free
Cute garment bag for a trip! My sister gave me this as a birthday present: a cute pink bag! I love the design. I used this garment bag to attend my friend's wedding. I put my dress in this bag, and it can make my clothes wrinkle-free, which was something I struggled with before with other bags. TSA even asked me where I got it 😂

★★★★★Garment bag and carry-on in one
I absolutely love the Voyagers Travel Bag! It is so well designed and makes traveling much easier. I love that it converts from a garment bag into a carry-on, which helps keep my clothes organized and looking nice while still giving me plenty of room for everything I need. It feels sturdy and well made, and the compartments are very convenient.

★★★★★Packed a week ahead, nothing wrinkled
This is a very nice garment bag. I love the design and works very well. Was going to it for a 4 day cruise. Packed a week in advance, dresses and jeans were not wrinkled (pay attention to material of dress).
